Introduction to Wheel Thrown Pottery – 4 weeks – £300

Class overview

Have you ever wanted to try pottery wheel throwing? Then this four week course is for you! No experience is required and all materials are included in the price. (Extra clay can be bought in the studio).

The first part of learning to use the pottery wheel is getting an introduction to the 3 principle steps: PREPARING your clay, CENTERING your clay, SHAPING your clay.

Week 1:

In our workshop Lesson 1: Prepare, Centre and Shape, you will be introduced to these three steps through demonstration and hands-on practice throwing simple shapes and cylinders on the potters wheel. You will have a 1 hour session with one of our experienced potters, followed by a further 1 hour of wheel time to practice. You will be shown how to set-up and clean-up your wheel and workspace. You will have six kilos of clay to play with.

Week 2:

Week 2 is practice week. You will have 2 hours on the wheel, with six kilos of clay.

Week 3:

Week 3 is fine tuning week. You will have a 1 hour session with one of our experienced potters followed by a further 1 hour of wheel time. You will have 6 kilos of clay to play with.

Week 4:

In week 4 students learn how to TRIM and TURN the vessels you made in previous lessons. Trimming and Turning is the next element in the wheel process. In this step you make your vessels more pleasing to the eye, tidying up rough edges, shaping the rim, adding a foot at the base of the vessel. After this session, we will bisque fire a maximum of 6 pieces in our kiln, though extra pieces can be fired for an additional fee.

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothes that you are relaxed about getting messy. We recommend trousers as you’ll sit close to the wheel as you throw.
Please ensure long hair is tied back, take off jewellery and watches and remove any long necklaces, scarves etc from around your neck. It is difficult to throw pots with long nails.

Other Information

Bisque fired work is usually available for collection 3 weeks after the workshop. Items not collected are only stored for 4 further weeks.

Wheel throwing classes have a maximum of 8 students. Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. Additional clay can be purchased if required.
